Chen Dance Center

A recognized leader in dance and a leading Asian American arts institution, this long-time Chinatown resident is the recipient of the 2002 NYS Governor’s Arts Award and the 2005 BESSIES Special Citation.  CDC realizes its mission to provide moving experiences in Asian American and contemporary dance through its three affiliate programs: 

H.T. Chen & Dancers (est. 1978) – a touring modern dance company dedicated to the creation of innovative works and the offering of quality educational programming

School (est. 1980) – a year-round performing arts school providing weekly lessons in dance and music to over 250 children

Theater (est. 1988) – a professional performing arts venue that supports the work of emerging artists through production services and series

 

Special Programs/Features

CDC produces and presents independent choreographers through two semiannual programs.  Visit website for up-to-date show information.

Ear to the Ground: Features commissioned works by emerging Asian American choreographers, the only commissioning series of its kind. 

Newsteps: Features the new works of emerging, innovative choreographers.

Teahouse Performances: Delicious morsels of dance, music, and treats! Features the choreography of H.T. Chen.

This spring, the NY Chinese Cultural Center’s School of the Arts Program is proud to offer numerous classes in Chinese Folk Dance, Chinese Language, and Chinese Art for children ages 3 ½ and up. Home to the acclaimed professional dance company, Dance China NY, the center provides a friendly educational environment for people interested in learning about Chinese arts and culture. Large mirror-paneled studios house classes in Chinese folk and ancient classical dance, Peking Opera, and acrobatics. Chinese painting, calligraphy, paper cutting, paper folding, and language, round out the curriculum. Students of all ages can enroll in classes specifically designed for their age level and abilities. Early drop off/late pick-up is also available.
