Mikata serves an excellent array of fresh sushi, sashimi, and hand rolls. Customers come regularly to try their weekly lunch special rolls, such as the Spicy Dragon Roll on Monday and American Dream Roll on Tuesday, all of which come with soup and salad. Other special lunch deals are priced from $6.25 to $11.75 and served from 11:30AM to 3:30PM, Monday to Friday. Mikata also offers substantial meals in bento boxes of sushi or sashimi, a hand roll, entrée, appetizer, and Japanese Pickles, accompanied by soup and salad and priced from $19.95 to $23.95. If you are in the mood for shell fish, don’t forget to try the soft shell crab tempura and Mikata seafood tempura (lobster tail & assorted seafood). For those who are tired or squeamish about eating raw fish, there is a large selection of delicious cooked dishes, including teriyaki, tempura, donburi and udon.
Mikata, which means a place for friends in Japanese, is located on the second floor above a Chinese dessert place. Both establishments share the main entrance which is bright red from top to bottom; an easy find on Centre Street. On the second floor, the atmosphere is quiet and relaxing. Neutral tones and dim lighting create a warm glow. At the sushi bar, skilled chefs can be seen animatedly preparing fresh sushi, sashimi and special hand rolls. A small full-service bar, unusual for Chinatown, is a good after work hang out where you can also watch the news or sporting events on the TV. There’s also a small private room for 15 people, partitioned with traditional Japanese shoji panels.
