Best Steamed Soup Dumplings (Shao Long Bao) in town
If you've never had Shanghainese food before, don’t worry. As you sit down, the waiter will ask if you want the famous steamed soup dumplings (Shao Long Bao), with pork or pork meat topped with crab roe, listed on the menu as “Steamed Buns,” accompanied by black vinegar & ginger sauce. The waiter will show you how to eat them properly, because you don’t want to waste a drop of the heavenly, lip-smacking hot broth that fills the steamed pockets. There are also many great dishes such as the Lion’s Head (Shanghainese Meat Balls), Razor Clams in Black Bean Sauce, Pan Fried Noodles, and Drunken Crab.
When people ask for directions to Pell Street, 9 out of 10 people seem to be going to Joe’s Shanghai. Well, prepare to wait in line and maybe even share a table. At Joe’s Shanghai, you can’t get romantic, but who cares when you get consistently good and authentic Shanghainese food. Judging from the lines and the many excellent reviews, this is probably the most popular restaurant in Chinatown.
