Wo Hop defines Chinese comfort food. The restaurant serves every kind of noodle imaginable: Lo Mein (soft noodles), Chow Fon (broad noodles), Chow Mai Fon (rice noodles), Chow Mein (regular and Canton style), Specialty Noodles (with Wo Hop’s special gravy), and homemade fried noodles that are accents to the soup or just munched on as a snack. But there are a lot more then just noodles in this decades-old establishment. With an extensive list of Szechwan and Asian specialties, meat and seafood dishes and Chinese omelets, there is something to please every palate. Some longtime favorites are the egg rolls, steamed/fried dumpling and spareribs Wo Hop, opened in 1938, stays open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and only closes for the ten days of Chinese New Year. Waiters are lifers and will tell you that they’re busy at all hours, the weekends being peak at 4:00 a.m. As you walk down the red stone steps, be careful to duck, or you’re in for a bump on the head. The walls of this classic Chinese late-late-night spot are lined with headshots of up-and-coming actors, photos of regulars and family members. The tight quarters seat about 50 patrons. The regulars range from locals, who grew up on this Chinese-American fare, to night-shift police and court officers. (This is probably one of the safest places in Chinatown at 4:00 a.m.) Their signature tee shirts sell for $6.00. Recently a Wo Hop regular was stopped in Maine by another Wo Hop fan who recognized the shirt.
