Authentic Shanghai & Hang Chow Cuisine.
Be sure to ask for the daily specials which feature the Chef's creative dishes made with fresh ingredients with a touch of traditional Shanghai. Aside from the Crab Meat & Pork Steamed Juicy Buns that everyone loves, try their authentic appetizers like Steamed Shanghai Style Sticky Rice with Pork in Bamboo, Eight Treasure Rice Pudding, Sister Song Fish Soup, Aromatic Beef, Raw Crab with Soy Flavor marinated in rice wine and Smoked Fish (sweet with light smoky notes and hints of star anise). Some great entrees include Ham, Dry Scallops & Vegetables in Casserole, West Lake Fish Hang Chow Style, Sable Fish with Bean Paste Sauce, Bean Curd or Chinese Cabbage with Crab Meat. One very special dish needs to be ordered one day in advance - Baked Chicken Beggar Style - which is complicated to make and results in exceptionally tasty chicken. Try this!
You can easily overlook Shanghai Garden Restaurant (formerly known as Evergreen Shanghai) as another Shanghai restaurant that has now populated the streets of Chinatown. But if you haven't been to Shanghai Garden, you haven't really had classic authentic Shanghai cuisine. Wonderful, traditional, and authentic Shanghai dishes are the specialty at this plain, bright restaurant. The kitchen is run by a former top chef in Shanghai. Before immigrating to New York, he was a chef for 30 years, cooking for important politicians and government officials in China.
