Jing Fong Restaurant

The Food:

Known as a dim sum powerhouse, Jing Fong serves up well-known delicacies like har gow (shrimp dumpling), siu mai (pork dumpling) and egg custard tarts along with interesting dishes like clams in black bean sauce, pigs’ knuckles with ginger, chicken feet, fried wontons, sesame balls and a variety of squid, cuttlefish and shrimp.  If hijacking the push cart is not your style, you can head to the self-service table, which has assorted shellfish, eggplant and freshly fried turnip cakes.  When the bustle of dim sum dies down, the dinner menu complete with all manner of seafood and an extensive selection of Cantonese cuisine takes center stage.  Jing Fong is often the site of private parties and community events in the evening, so call ahead to make sure it’s open to public.

The Scene:

The recent renovation of Jing Fong has added new sparkle to the largest banquet hall in Chinatown.  It now has three new large crystal chandeliers, three separate stages, marble flooring and new lighting.  This block wide restaurant is situated on the third floor, which is why the escalator ride takes so very long.  Any portion of the restaurant can be rented and the layout changed to your specifications.  They have an extensive banquet menu featuring delicacies like shark’s fin and abalone, or whatever suits your budget best.  Jing Fong’s alter ego is the biggest dim sum Mecca in Chinatown.  On the weekends, it’s flooded with locals and tourists.  A hands-on attitude is necessary to snag the best eats here; some people give up waiting at the table and opt to track down the cart they want or hover by the kitchen to get first dibs.
