Accidental Chinese Hipsters (Columbus Park)

By Alison Kuo  (ourchinatown.org)

These guys are the essence of what's amazing about Columbus Park in New York City's Chinatown, a place where old people congregate to jam Peking Opera. Jam hard, too. Their music is not for wimps. It is loud, percussive, and strange, full of high-pitched wailing and gender swapping, and sometimes you have to take your shirt off to do it.

Alison Kuo runs the blog Accidental Chinese Hipsters from her bedroom/art studio in Brooklyn. A native Texan with a Chinese father, she grew up highly valuing the perfect char siu bao.

What is Mid-Autumn Festival?

(From:  Wikipedia)

The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the few most important holidays in the Chinese calendar, the others being Spring Festival and

Winter Solstice. Accompanying the celebration, there are additional cultural or regional customs, such as:

  • Eating mooncakes.
  • Matchmaking. In some parts of China, dances are held for young men and women to find partners. "One by one, young women are encouraged to throw their handkerchiefs to the crowd. The young man who catches and returns the handkerchief has a chance of romance."
  • Carrying brightly lit lanterns, lighting lanterns on towers, floating sky lanterns.
  • Burning incense in reverence to deities including Chang'e
  • Fire Dragon Dances.
  • Moon rabbit is a traditional icon.
