Golden Unicorn Restaurant

From the outside, Golden Unicorn Restaurant looks unassuming enough. Some Chinese characters hang above the exterior of the office building it calls home, and a simple awning beckons diners inside. But everything changes once you're through those doors, and it becomes clear why this restaurant has garnered consistent praise, including a Michelin Guide Recommendation in 2014. Sweeping golden curtains and red accents line the walls, and elaborate chandeliers hang above sprawling dining areas that can accommodate up to 500 guests or 250 sets of twins. It all looks like a royal palace-one where the monarch is obsessed with delectable cuisine.

At lunchtime, suit-clad waiters and waitresses glide through the three-floor space with carts of dim sum. On any given day, they could bring up to 100 classic options: pork dumplings, steamed buns, salt baked shrimp in the shell, and much more. After those carts return to their stations, the kitchen shifts focus to main courses of Cantonese-style cuisine. Deep-fried seafood rolls, baked pork, and egg-white soup all transport diners to the Far East. Should the vast menu seem overwhelming, diners can go the prix fixe route or try each week's new collection of specials. On certain evenings, Golden Unicorn Restaurant also hosts banquets in celebration of weddings, birthdays, and other events.

Originally opened in 1920, Nom Wah Tea Parlor is NYC's oldest dim sum parlor and is located in the heart of Chinatown. This throwback gem was recently remodeled, but it retains the old-timey charm that has kept it buzzing for almost a century. Longtime regulars and first-timers enjoy the incredible dim sum, such as har gow (a traditional Chinese shrimp dumpling) and the Original egg roll (mixed veggies and chicken rolled in an egg crepe, then fried), plus other dishes like traditional pan-fried noodles.

MOCATALKS: Unearthing the Story World of Phillip Chen

Thu, Sep 25, 2014 from 7pm - 9pm

Visual artist Phillip Chen creates relief etchings inspired by his family stories. One print unearths his great grandfather's experience as a gold miner in California during the Gold Rush in the 1860s. Another is based on his uncle who owned the only restaurant in Fort Wayne, Indiana that served African Americans in the 1930s. Please join Phillip Chen in conversation with MOCA's co-founder Jack (John Kuo Wei) Tchen as they discuss the intriguing yet complex stories within these amazing prints and address the important distinction between history and memory.

 Chinatown Summer Internship Program

This year, the Chinatown Partnership and Chinatown B.I.D. summer internship program welcomed high school and college interns from Stuyvesant High School, Baruch College, New York University, University of Buffalo and more. The cohort included Chinatown natives and those who are less familiar with the community, and new immigrants as well as second-generation Chinese Americans.

Over the past weeks, the interns helped organize Chinatown's Weekend Walks events, conduct merchant surveys of Hurricane Sandy's impacts, update the Chinatown Partnership's bilingual Neighborhood Community Resource Guide (to be released in the near future), conduct parking surveys, and developed bilingual content for the Chinatown Partnership and Chinatown BID's soon-to-be relaunched website.

We had the pleasure of introducing these interns to Chinese and Chinese American culture, history, and all the delicious foods in our neighborhood that many have never tried.
