Dragon & Lion Dances at Pearl River Mart

On
Sunday February 5th, Pearl River will host a traditional Chinese LION AND DRAGON DANCE to celebrate the Year of the Dragon. Master Wan's martial arts groups will delight audiences of every age with authentic acrobatics and dazzling costumes. This event is FREE for all.

Year of the Dragon: Birth Rate Spike (Daily News)

When Lunar New Year is celebrated later this month, it will usher in the auspicious Year of the Dragon - and maybe a bumper crop of babies. "I would say the birth rate will go up because of the symbol," Chinatown Partnership executive director Wellington Chen said last week. The dragon is the most powerful of the 12 signs in the Chinese zodiac, which assigns an animal to each year. Korean and Vietnamese astrology also mark 2012 as a dragon year.

      January 28th: Lunar New Year Festival at the Children's Museum of the Arts
Asian American Arts Centre is pleased to announce its annual "Lunar New Year Celebration", this year in collaboration with the Children's Museum of the Arts (CMA) at its brand new spacious facility. The celebration features many special events and activities full of fun and cheer.
 
         
      January 29th: Chinese New Year Celebration Performance  1pm: Lion Dance and tea in the Chinese Scholar's Garden, 2pm: Performance by the New York Chinese Cultural Center in the Music Hall. Performances will include: Handkerchief Dance, Miao Dance, Men's Drum Dance, Mongolian Dance, Tibetan Dance, Monkey King with 4 Little Monkeys. Snug Harbor Cultural Center.  
         
      January 28th: New Year Performance of Dances to Welcome the Spring:  At the Winter Garden, 200 Vesey St. between 1:00pm to 4:00pm Usher in good fortune and celebrate the Year of the Dragon-the most auspicious animal of the Chinese Zodiac-with performances, interactive gallery activities, and art-making workshops for all ages.  
         
      Lunar New Year Party at the Hester St. Collabrative:  On January 26th, join HSC to celebrate the New Year at their annual Lunar New Year Party! 5:30pm design activities for children in the HSC workshop. 7pm drinks and hors d'oeuvres. HSC will also be unveiling the 5th annual installation of Lunar New Year lanterns, in nearby Sara D. Roosevelt Park! Start Time: 5:30pm, End Time: 10pm   
         
    February 4th: Celebrating Lunar New Year - At the MET, there will be performances, interactive gallery activities, and art-making workshops for all ages. All programs & performances are free with Museum admission. The cafeteria will also be celebrating Lunar New Year with a traditional Chinese menu including soy sauce chicken, pork buns, and more. All are welcome.   
         
      The Free Chinatown Food Tour (tip & food costs not included) will take you through Chinatown to sample tasty fried dumplings, tapioca bubble tea, taro-filled sticky buns, candied crabs and much more.
